AMITABH BACHCHAN HAS STARTED MANY TRENDS. LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT A FEW OF THEM

TREND PRE-AMITABH AMITABH POST-AMITABH
THE ANGRY YOUNG MAN Before Bachchan, movies generally were of social nature, gearing up on romantic themes more often than not. With Namak Haram and Zanjeer in 1973, Amitabh brought about realism into commercial cinema and with it came the era of the 'Angry Young Man', the most enduring icon of Indian cinema. What made the roles work were Bachchan's focused eyes, booming voice, and an extremely effective articulating ability. From Sunjay Dutt to Jackie Shroff to Sunny Deol, most film stars of the 80s and early 90s tried to live up to the image of that icon created by Bachchan.
FASHION With few exceptions, actors before Amitabh looked and dressed generally in conventional outfits Amitabh changed that by resetting trends in appearance and outfits. With movies like Amar Akbar Anthony and Suhaag, he made the streetsmart outfits a national craze. In particular, his impact on fashion and hairstyle have been long standing. Now, every actor tries to go for that look. From Shahrukh Khan to Sunjay Dutt to Anil Kapoor to Chunky Pandey to many other actors who have come and gone have followed Bachchan's style in outfits and appearance
CORPORATIZATION Before Bachchan, most actors acted and did not cross over into other venues of the film industry. With Shahenshah in 1988, Amitabh Bachchan became the first major actor to take distribution rights for his film in lieu of his salary; and in 1995, he paved way for the first full blown event management and software control entity in Bombay, ABCL Since then, a multitude of bollywood stars and other figures have jumped into the production fray launching their own companies. Some examples are Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla's Dreamz Unlimited and Jackie Shroff and Govinda's new company
TELEVISION Before Bachchan, active film stars did not venture into television In 2000, Amitabh signed onto to host Star TV's Quiz Show: Kaun Banega Crorepati for a record sum of 14 crores/year. He is currently the highest paid actor in India with KBC shattering all sorts of ratings records. After Bachchan's success, many film stars like Govinda, Rekha, and Hrithik Roshan have been signing up with satellite channels to produce and/or host their own television programs
PLAYBACK Before Bachchan, actors acted and singers sang. Dilip Kumar for instance would never think of doing a number from the lines of Mukesh or Rafi. In 1979, Amitabh Bachchan did his own playback for the first time for the movie: Mr. Natwarlal. The song was a rousing hit. Bachchan sang several times later in his career with each song becoming a huge success. In the mid-90s, actors like Amir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Govinda, and Sunjay Dutt started to follow up on that by doing their own playbacks as well.
WORLD TOURS Before Bachchan, the only people who gave world tours from India were professional singers like Lata Mangeskar or Ravi Shankar etc. In 1981, Amitabh went to New York and held the 'Tonight with Amitabh Bachchan' concert and became the first Asian to pack Madison Square Garden. In the later years, he toured London's Wembley and Giant Stadium amongst the other great venues in the world. Virtually everywhere, his concerts hold the attendance mark for Asian concerts. The concert trend really picked off in the 90s with each and every star and actor touring the world from city to city, each now getting a chance to be appreciated by the worldwide fanbase of the Indian films
