Bachchan stars in Kutumb (IndiaFM, 04/09/01)
Mahesh Manjrekar is one busy director. But the speed with which he completes his projects takes you by surprise. Youíll be astounded to know that the director will have as many as five releases this year, starting with AHSAAS (Sunil Shetty, Neha) in June, PITAAH (Sanju, Jackie) in July, the Sony project (models Diwakar Pundir and Nikhil Chinappa) in August, TERA MERA SAATH RAHEN (Ajay Devgan) in Dashehra and TERE PYAR KI KASAM (Sanju, Sunil) by the year-end.
In between, he would also shoot for KAANTE, which he says, would be like a holiday for him since I am acting, not directing this time. Then thereís Vijay Galaniís new film with Bobby Deol, for which he says, I want this to be Bobbyís best project.
But the project he is all geared up and excited about is KUTUMB, which stars Amitabh Bachchan in the central role. The film, to be produced by Firoz A. Nadiadwala, will have a massive star cast, which is under finalisation right now.
Once he is through with these projects, Manjrekar intends taking a 6-month break from work. I havenít had a holiday for a long time now. I intend writing scripts during the spare time and learn how to play a piano, he tells me.
So when he bounces back after a brief sabbatical, donít be surprised if he, besides writing scripts and directing movies, also composes music for films. What say?

Mahesh Manjrekar has just managed to pull off a coup! He has actually
convinced none other than the biggest star of the millennium, Amitabh
Bachchan, to play the central character in his forthcoming film. According to
reports, the Big B is floored with the subject and very keen on doing the
film. The only hitch so far is dates. "Right now he is busy with his other
projects," says the young director. It seems Bachchan wants to devote his
full time to the film, the subject of which is very close to his heart. The
film is titled 'Kutumb' (Family), and Sunjay Dutt, another of Manjrekar's
favourites, will also play a pivotal role in it. Manjrekar, of course, is
willing to wait till Bachchan has the required dates for the film. In fact,
he swore that he would rather scrap the film than take anyone else instead
