Apun Ka Choice (Feb 26, 01)
Amitabh Bachchan, epitome of Hindi film hero, is straying off from his
mainstream sensibilities and taking a plunge into the world of alternative
cinema. On the cards is Big Bs film with the noted Bengali filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh
(director of the acclaimed films like Unishe April and Bariwali). The
yet-to-be-titled film is based on a story by Shirishendu Mukhopadhyay, the
famous Bengali novelist, and has Tabu playing Big B's co-star.
In the film Amitabh plays a middle-class man (in his 50s) who is haunted by
questions relating to his identity, sexuality and his relationship with those
close to him.For a man who has always played a larger-than-life image on the big screen,
working with Ghosh will be a refreshing break from the stereotypical roles in
Bollywood biggies. Exploring relationships has always been Rituparno's forte
and the protagonist in his films is an ordinary man.
A director of artistic sensibilities Ghosh has an eye for subtle details. His
films have distinct cinematic vocabulary of their own. Besides, this time he
has a casting coup on hand. His teaming up with Big B and Tabu makes for an
interesting ensemble. Big B is the doyen of film industry while Tabu, on the
other hand, is a budding talent and has to her credit many laudable
performances. This is going to be Bachchan's second film in Bangla after Anusandhan in
which he teamed with Rakhee
